Students who want to bring a particular structure and focus to their studies through the Institute can pursue a noncredit Certificate of Completion in any of these areas:

  • Nonprofit Management
  • Nonprofit Development
  • Volunteer Management

Requirements

Nonprofit Management - A general survey of the issues and concerns of managing a healthy nonprofit.

Required courses:

  • Introduction to Nonprofit Management
  • Financial Management in Nonprofit Organizations
  • Governance of Nonprofit Organizations (formerly "Managing Nonprofit Boards of Directors ")
  • Strategic Planning or Program Evaluation
  • Values-Based Management (effective human resource management in the nonprofit sector)
  • Elective (consult advisor)
  • Internship (advisor approval required)

Nonprofit Development - A series devoted to training professional development directors.

Required courses:

  • Introduction to Nonprofit Management
  • Fundamentals of Fundraising in Nonprofit Organizations
  • Governance of Nonprofit Organizations (formerly "Managing Nonprofit Boards of Directors ")
  • Strategic Planning or Program Evaluation
  • Internship/Supervised Field Project (advisor approval required)
  • Plus TWO of the following courses:
    • Advanced Fundraising: Major and Planned Gifts (may be taken out of sequence with Fundamentals of Fundraising with permission
      of the instructor)
    • Conference & Event Management
    • Contemporary Issues in Fundraising
    • Effective Marketing and Corporate Sponsorship for Nonprofits and the Public Sector
    • Grantwriting for Nonprofit Organizations
    • Other related course with advisor's approval

Volunteer Program Management- A program oriented around evaluating agency or organizational needs and capacities for volunteers, and around the unique issues of effective recruitment, training, and management of volunteers. May be done in conjunction with the online Volunteer Engagement and Leadership Program (VELP).

Required courses:

  • Introduction to Nonprofit Management
  • Advanced Volunteer Management
  • Governance of Nonprofit Organizations (formerly "Managing Nonprofit Boards of Directors ")
  • Values-Based Management (effective human resource management in the nonprofit sector)
  • Volunteerism and Volunteer Management
  • Elective (consult advisor)
  • Internship (advisor approval required)

 

NOTES
Each basic certificate requires a total of six (6) courses plus the internship. Students can earn an ADVANCED CERTIFICATE by taking two additional electives through the Institute for a total of eight (8) courses plus the internship.

To register for an INPM noncredit Certificate course, fill out the attached INPM Registration form.

PREFERRED REGISTRATION DATE:
You are encouraged to register for INPM classes at least two weeks prior to first day of the term. We will confirm your registration by email. Feel free to call the office to make sure it has arrived if the time is close.
 
PAYMENT:
Each noncredit Certificate course costs $495. You should include payment along with your registration unless you make other arrangements with our office. Tuition is due upon registration or before the first class meeting.
 
LATE PAYMENT:
To be consistent with Portland State University policy, a late payment fee will be charged at the end of the second week of class, the initial late payment fee is $40.00. An additional late payment fee of $59.00 will be assessed after the eighth week. Contact us to explore making alternative arrangements for delayed payment and avoid late fees.
 
WITHDRAWAL AND REFUNDS:
Please notify INPM as soon as you know you will need to withdraw from a course. Refunds are offered on a pro-rata basis consistent with Portland State University policy. Withdrawals prior to the second week of the term are assessed no fee. Withdrawals within the second week of the term are charged a 30% fee. Withdrawals beginning the third week of the term are charged a 60% fee. Withdrawals in the fourth week of the term are charged an 80% fee. No refunds after the fourth week.
 
* NOTE - "Certificate" courses are not for formal academic credit. If you are considering enrolling in a course for graduate credit and wish to apply for admission to the MPA programs, contact the Public Administration office at PSU (503) 725-3920.
